The Importance of Gutter Maintenance
If you own a home, you might not appreciate how important the gutters are to your house’s upkeep and maintenance. They certainly don’t get as much attention as the home’s plumbing, for example. But in many ways they are just as important and their neglect can cause just as severe damage.
Your gutters act as irrigation systems ushering away runoff rainwater from your roof to the ground, where it is further disseminated. While gravity would certainly take care of the job on its own, gutters make so you can walk under your roof without getting dumped by runoff. It also allows the homeowner to decide where all the water will go.
Of course, more than water gets in the gutters. Foliage and other debris can wash in there and easily clog the system. This is why it’s so important to regularly check gutters at least every month or so and certainly if you see any odd output. A gutter that gets clogged can eventually break away from the house. Clearing it of debris is much cheaper than gutter repair. If it is disbursing water in odd places or other than where it is meant, you can wind up needing concrete repair—also not cheap.
For all they do, gutters receive very little attention. But if a homeowner is smart they’ll do the bare minimum to keep them flowing smoothly.
